The total number of people speaking Portuguese is about 240 million people, including 220 million native speakers. According to various criteria the Portuguese language takes VI-VIII place by the number of estimated native speakers in the world.

The Portuguese written language is built on the basis of Latin alphabet with a number of diacritical signs.

There are two main types of Portuguese: European and Brazilian; plus there are a number of Creole varieties in the countries of Africa and Asia, differing phonetically, lexically and orthographically, least grammatically.

European variant of Portuguese with a considerable number of borrowings from African languages is spoken in former Portuguese colonies - Angola and Mozambique.

In Portugal there are north dialects (provinces Veira, Entre-Duro-e-Minho, Miranda) adn southern (Estremadura, Alemtejo, Algarve). There are dialects of north and south in Brazil. Portuguese was greatly influenced by Spanish which had been used for a long time as a literary language in Portugal.

French was also influenced by Portuguese. Discovery and reclamation of huge overseas territories left its mark on the language. Numerous exotic words, mainly of Asian origin, found its way into the Portuguese language and into other European languages through it.

In Brazil the Brazilian variant of the language dominates of course. The language is of great interest for Capoeristas not only because it is the official language of Brazil but also because all the songs which are sung by Capoeristas are in Portuguese.
